Faux feeling Something done to me
Insulted
Not a feeling: a thought about what someone did.
Also known as affronted
‘I think you said or did something to show contempt for me.’
Why it’s not a feeling
Insulted claims to know what someone meant: that their words or actions showed contempt for you. It fits ‘you insulted me’, so it is your reading of them, not a description of you. Sometimes the contempt was intended and sometimes not, but the anger or hurt has arrived regardless.
Feelings underneath
Needs
When these needs aren’t met
Saying it as a feeling
‘I feel insulted.’
When you called my cooking ‘edible, just about’ in front of your parents, I felt hurt and embarrassed, because I need respect and consideration.
