Faux feeling A need dressed up as a feeling

Unappreciated

Not a feeling: a need, named as met or missing.

Also known as devalued, undervalued

‘I think what I give is not valued.’

Why it’s not a feeling

Unappreciated takes the need for appreciation and puts ‘un-’ in front of it. It claims that what you give is not valued, which is a conclusion about what goes on in other people’s minds. Name the need plainly and look for the feeling beside it: you might be sad, hurt or frustrated.

Feelings underneath

Needs

When these needs aren’t met

Saying it as a feeling

‘I feel unappreciated.’

When I handed in the budget I had spent three weeks on and the only reply was ‘received’, I felt hurt and frustrated, because I need appreciation and recognition.
