Faux feeling Something done to me
Ripped off
Not a feeling: a thought about what someone did.
Also known as screwed
‘I think you took more than was fair and left me short.’
Why it’s not a feeling
Ripped off is a verdict on a deal: someone took more than their share and you paid for it. It fits ‘you ripped me off’, so it reports a judgement about fairness and about their motives, not a sensation. The heat underneath is usually anger or resentment, or a duller disappointment.
Feelings underneath
Needs
When these needs aren’t met
Saying it as a feeling
‘I feel ripped off.’
When the invoice came to £340 after you quoted £120 for the repair, I felt angry and resentful, because I need fairness and trust.
