Faux feeling Something done to me
Interrupted
Not a feeling: a thought about what someone did.
‘I think you cut me off before I had finished.’
Why it’s not a feeling
Interrupted describes something that may well have happened: someone spoke before you had finished. Yet ‘I feel interrupted’ names their action, not your experience of it, which is why it passes the ‘you ___ed me’ test. What stirred as your words were cut off might be frustration, irritation or hurt.
Feelings underneath
Needs
When these needs aren’t met
Saying it as a feeling
‘I feel interrupted.’
When you started talking about your plans before I had finished describing my week, I felt frustrated, because I need to be heard. Would you be willing to let me finish first?
