Faux feeling Something done to me
Distrusted
Not a feeling: a thought about what someone did.
Also known as distrust, mistrusted, untrusted
‘I think you do not believe me or do not rely on me.’
Why it’s not a feeling
Distrusted is about what someone else believes: that they cannot rely on you or take you at your word. It is your reading of their stance, not an inner state, and ‘I think you distrust me’ says it plainly. Sadness, hurt and frustration are often what is really there.
Feelings underneath
Needs
When these needs aren’t met
Saying it as a feeling
‘I feel distrusted.’
When you rang the school to check that I had dropped the children off, I felt hurt and sad, because I need trust and understanding.
