Often confused with
Nostalgic is about a time already past; bittersweet tends to arise in the moment itself, when joy and loss are happening together.
Nostalgic looks back to a time that has gone, with fondness alongside the missing; homesick is an ache for a place or people that still exist but are far away.
Nostalgic is a fond pull towards the past, often with some sweetness in it; sad is a heaviness about loss without that warmth.
Sentimental is tenderness stirred by a keepsake or a memory and stays mostly warm; nostalgic carries a clearer sense that the time itself has gone and is missed.
Wistful is a faint wish for something out of reach, or for what never was; nostalgic looks back at a time you actually lived and misses it.
